The Battle of Largs

2nd October, 1263

King Alexander III led the Scottish army against a Norwegian force under King Hakon. King Hakon was responding to Scottish attacks on the Isle of Skye.

When Hakon arrived peace talks were opened which dragged on without much success and there were a few skirmishes. Reports are sketchy but it seems the Norwegians were defeated and they withdrew to Orkney possibly intending to renew the fighting after the winter. As it turned out Hakon died of an illness in December.

King Magnus succeeded Hakon and he signed the Treaty of Perth in 1266 which saw the disputed isles fall under Scottish jurisdiction in return for a fee.
