Donald III

Donald III was born in 1033; he was the son of Duncan I and brother of Malcolm III. He first took the throne in 1093 and seems to have ruled jointly with his nephew Edmund who was the second son of Malcolm III and Margaret.

In 1094 he was removed by Duncan II who led an English army north and claimed the throne. When the army left a few months later Duncan was murdered and Donald reclaimed the throne holding it until 1097. In 1097 Edgar came north as his brother had done with English support and removed Donald again. This time Donald was punished by Edgar being blinded and imprisoned at Rescobie in Angus where he died in 1100.

Donald left no heir and his two short reigns were dominated by the struggle for the crown and the tension between Scotland and the incoming influences of the English and Normans.
