Duncan I

Duncan I was born in 1001 and ruled Scotland from 1034 until 1040. By all accounts he was a fairly useless king and spent most of his reign murdering challengers to his throne. He led an unsuccessful attack on Durham in 1039.

He was defeated in battle in 1040 by Macbeth and killed. Duncan was buried on Iona. His sons fled to England after his death but Malcolm returned a few years later and defeated and killed Macbeth before being crowned King Malcolm III in 1058. His other son Donald also ruled the kingdom as Donald III from 1093 until 1097.
